Central Intermediate Fall Sports Tryout Information 2024-2025

5th Grade

  • 6th, 7th, and 8th graders can tryout.

  • Practices are every day minus most Sundays.  If a practice were to occur on a Sunday it would not be mandatory.  

  • During practice, we work on the fundamentals of baseball, conditioning and game plan.  

  • There is a varsity team and a junior varsity team.  The varsity team consists of all 8th graders and some 7th and 6th graders.  The junior varsity team consists of 7th and 6th graders. 

  • The varsity team typically plays 20 games with a state series tournament at the end of the year. 

  • The junior varsity team typically plays 15 games.  

  • A certificate is handed out for each participating player. Varsity team players receive a letter/pin depending on playing time.  Plaques are handed out for offensive mvp, defensive mvp, lowest earned run average, and most improved player. 

  • Each year a camp takes place in June for incoming 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.  Open field will usually take place in the middle of July. 



Basketball-Boys

  • 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Girls Basketball tryouts/practice will normally start at the end of August. Exact dates can be seen HERE.  

  • A current physical is required to tryout.

  • There are three teams (6th, 7th and 8th) but players may be pulled up to a higher grade level based on Coach’s decision 

  • Practices will take place Monday-Friday and occasional Saturdays

  • Throughout practice we will work on the fundamentals, game situations and the overall development of the basketball player

  • 7th and 8th grade teams will play 20-22 regular season games followed by the state series

  • 6th grade team will have 5-10 games based on other team's availability, these games will take place after the 7th and 8th grade games have ended for the day

  • Open gyms will take place during the summer and the fall before the season starts

  • There will be a summer camp offered at Central, dates will be determined based on gym availability.

Bowling

  • Open to 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Boys and Girls. No experience required! All participants must have a current physical on file in the CIS office in order to participate.

  • Intramural season runs mid-October to mid-January occuring once a week at Plaza Lanes. There are no tryouts for intramurals and no maximum participation limit. The program centers on learning skills, building teamwork, and having fun!

  • The Competitive Bowling Team begins in late-January and runs through April. Practices will be 2-3 times a week at Plaza Lanes. Local meets are being planned.

  • IESA competitions are scheduled in April. Check the IESA website for exact dates and times. A maximum of 6 boys and 6 girls are able to compete for IESA.

  • For those that cannot take part in the program, but wish to know more information about bowling in the area, please contact Mrs. Soltow.

Cheerleading

  • Cheerleading typically has a summer camp to learn skills and cheers. Our season begins in August/September when school is in session and ends in early February. We cheer for girls and boys basketball (home games) during the winter season and have a competition towards the end of January-early February.

  • Cheerleading is open to incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th graders with tryouts being held in spring for the following school year.

  • Once school resumes in the fall, we will have practices 2-3 days a week until the basketball season begins. After that, practices can be reduced to 1-2 times a week depending on what we need to work on. When we get closer to our competition, practices will increase.

  • Each cheerleader will earn a certificate at the end of the season.

Cross Country

  • Cross country is a running sport open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. The season begins with optional summer runs in June/July and a Cross Country camp before the season begins. Once the season begins in early August, runners will compete in meets all throughout the area with every runner participating. Throughout the course of the season, athletes will compete in races that are approximately 2 miles long over a variety of terrain.

  • There are no tryouts or cuts creating a very large composition of students. Athletes are expected to perform with minimal supervision at times and continued behavioral issues may result in dismissal from the team.

  • Most importantly, cross country is more than a sport…it is a family.

Dance Team

  • Dance tryouts are normally held in April. There is a parent meeting in May and camp (for those who made the team) in August. Practices begin the second week of school and normally end before November when the boy’s basketball season begins. 

  • The dance team is made up of 7th and 8th grade students.

  • Practices are once a week on Tuesdays from 3:00-4:30 where we work on technique and breakdown/polish the routines. Dancers will also have dances posted on a Google Classroom where they are expected to continue to practice the routines. 

  • Dancers perform at all home boy’s basketball games during 8th grade halftime. We also hold a clinic for K-6 students sometime in the winter and perform at a few assemblies. We also participate in the Pantherette Showcase normally held in March.

  • A certificate and pin are handed out for each participating dancer.  Dancers will also receive a letter if this was their first sport.

Golf

  • Begins in late July and ends middle September. Check the IESA calendar for exact dates Boys and Girls Golf

  • 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th boys and girls can try out. There will be separate boys and girls teams that will practice at the same time each week.

  • Practices will be held at Hillcrest Golf Center on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

  • During practice, we work on fundamentals including driving, chipping, putting, and course strategy. Depending on the number of players and their ability level, practice may be divided up into range/putting green time and actual rounds on the course. 

  • Currently, the IESA runs a Sectional tournament, with qualifiers proceeding to the State tournament. There will be 2-3 additional matches with local schools planned. 12 players selected by the coach will attend these matches.

  • ***All equipment must be provided by participants. Players are expected to have their own bag, clubs, balls, etc. Pull/push carts may be used but also need to be provided by the player. Electric carts will not be allowed. The USGA rules of golf apply and will be taught as needed to the players. 

  • Additional tournaments and lesson opportunities will be provided as they become available or upon request. 



Softball

  • Softball tryouts are usually held in July.

  • The Central Trojans softball team is for 6th through 8th grade girls. Tryouts begin at the end of July and are listed on the IESA website each year for the exact start date. All participants must have a current physical on file in the CIS office in order to participate.

  • Practices are Monday through Saturday once the team is set. Practices focus on fundamentals, game sense, and conditioning to prepare the team for games.

  • Each year our team participates in our annual field clean up day and a team bonding activity. Our season includes the City Tournament (all Washington schools) then games throughout the week with some double headers.

  • Our season ends in late September with an IESA State Series (Regionals, Sectionals, State Finals). Once our season is concluded, we have an end of the year parents vs. players slow-pitch game.

  • All players will receive a certificate. Depending on playing time, a player may also receive a letter/pin.

  • We host a camp each year in June for four days (Monday through Thursday) for those entering 3rd through 8th grade. The last day of camp includes a scrimmage and awards. Click HERE for the softball camp form with more details.

  • Track season begins on or around March 1st.  The team is composed of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders interested in a fast paced and challenging program.  All participants must have a current physical on file to begin practice.  Athletes participating in other activities in the current school year do not need a new physical.

  • There are no tryouts or cuts on the Central Team creating a very large composition of students.  Athletes are expected to perform with minimal supervision at times and continued behavioral issues may result in dismissal from the team.

  • 8th graders may compete in 8th grade level events only.  7th graders may compete in 7th or 8th grade events.  6th graders may compete in 7th or 8th grade events, there are no 6th grade specific events.  At events where participation is limited by the host school, only 6th graders that can compete with the top athletes in the event will participate.

  • Track Meet organization is subject to the host school’s competition guidelines.  Entries may be limited to a specific number of participants per event.  For example, a host school may limit participating schools’ entries to two runners in the 100 meter dash, per grade for a total of four per school in the 100.  Dual or Tri meets may allow for more participant entries in each event, but Invitationals and larger meets will most likely be limited to two or three per event.  

  • The running events are:  100 hurdles, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m, and relays for the 4x100, 4x200, and 4x400.

  • The field events are:  Shotput, Discus, Long Jump, and High Jump

Volleyball

  • 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade girls may try out. Girls can try out for the team corresponding to their grade level. 7th and 8th grade games are regular throughout the season. 6th grade games happen on scheduled evenings and after 7th/8th grade games. There may be some 6th grade tournaments.

  • Volleyball tryouts happen in late November/early December, and the season lasts through early to mid-March.

  • A current physical is required to tryout 

  • Practices take place Monday - Friday and occasional Saturdays.

  • Practices are focused on fundamentals, game situation, and overall development of players.

  • 7th and 8th grade teams play about 20-22 games per season.

  • 6th grade team plays 6-8 games per season including tournaments.

Wrestling
